Special Considerations for Women with SCI/D

Mother’s Day is almost here and while most people are scrambling to buy a gift, United Spinal Association reminds mothers and women everywhere that the most important gift is regular health care. While it is an important part of quality of life for all women, for those with spinal cord injuries or disorders (SCI/D), the right care is often difficult to find. Useful information pertaining to the unique medical needs and health concerns of women living with SCI/D can be found in the Association’s newest pamphlet, Women’s Health: Special Considerations for Women with Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders. Copies may be obtained by calling Marketing Department at 800-404-2898, ext. 278, or by e-mailing at dzayas@unitedspinal.org.

The pamphlet was created by United Spinal’s Women’s Advisory Committee, which is committed to keeping women with SCI/D informed through education, advocacy, increased awareness, and protection of civil rights to ensure adequate health care and expand life choices.

“I have had a spinal cord injury for 22 years and have never seen a health brochure geared to women with spinal cord injuries,” said Wendy Crawford, Chairperson for United Spinal Association’s Women’s Advisory Committee. “This is such important and necessary information that all women should have as soon as they are injured or diagnosed. Thank you United Spinal Association!”

There are numerous women’s health care issues that continue despite SCI/D and, in addition to arranging for these important annual tests and screening procedures, women with SCI/D must find facilities that offer these services in a way that is accessible, both physically and attitudinally. Finding health care providers that understand the special needs of women with SCI/D may be a challenge.

United Spinal Association, a national membership organization for people with spinal cord injury or disorders (SCI/D), is dedicated to enhancing the lives of these individuals by assuring quality health care, promoting research, advocating for civil rights and independence, educating the public about these issues and enlisting its help to achieve these fundamental goals. Membership is free and open to all people with spinal cord disabilities.
