Teachers, camp counselors, parents and students are encouraged to order copies from United Spinal’s Publications Hotline, 1-800-444-0120, or download Stay Safe by visiting www.unitedspinal.org and clicking on “Publications & Resources” located on the home page.
Stay Safe features a “safety patrol” cartoon character who focuses attention on SCI prevention tips when riding in an automobile, when biking or swimming, or using a ladder safely to avoid a fall. The booklet also contains brief, basic information on the nature of a spinal cord injury, as well as additional web site prevention resources.
Each year, there are approximately 11,000 new spinal cord injuries in the United States and, as travel and recreational activity increase during the summertime, so, too, do the number of spinal cord injuries. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, estimates that there are between 222,000 to 285,000 persons living with a spinal cord injury in our nation.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, United Spinal Association is a national membership organization for people with spinal cord disabilities. United Spinal has enabled members, as well as other persons with disabilities, to lead full and productive lives. In addition to helping write the Americans with Disabilities Act, United Spinal produces and distributes publications and offers workshops about laws and issues that relate to the disabled community. Their most popular publication is Disability Etiquette, which gives tips on interacting with people with disabilities.
