2006 Tire Rack Solo National Championships

Jackson Heights, NY––United Spinal Association will be attending The 2006 Tire Rack Solo National Championships on September 27 and 28 at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas. Through its recent partnership with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), United Spinal encourages people with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) and other disabilities who use adaptive automotive equipment to participate in competitive Motorsports.

In addition to partnering with SCCA, other joint ventures with a diverse group of motorsports trailblazers has enabled United Spinal’s grassroots Motorsports campaign to reach new audiences across the country and has offered people with disabilities invaluable resources for participating in Solo car events, which are SCCA’s brand for the general sport of autocross.

“Any one can join and participate in SCCA events,” said Michael E. Dickerson, SCCA’s Region Development Manager. “There are no restrictions due to any physical condition, unless a member’s physician indicates restrictions should apply when a member applies for a wheel-to-wheel racing license. For Solo events, no such license is required. Getting involved locally is very easy. Simply contact the local SCCA Region. From there it is simply a matter of saying ‘I want to play’, and the door will be opened!”

Bill Hannigan, United Spinal’s senior membership consultant, who sustained a spinal cord injury in a motorcycle accident in 1995, has recently discovered the unique benefits and thrill of participating in motorsports. “Our goal is to let people know that there are many exciting opportunities out there such as SCCA Solo Car competition, which occur in every region of the country.” Hannigan said. “You just have to get out there and do it. That’s the United Spinal Motorsports’ motto: Living Life In Motion. Thanks to the support of the SCCA, we’re bringing this message to the Tire Rack Solo National Championships in hope of making a lasting impression on attendees who may not know too much about SCI/D or adaptive motorsports.”

Representatives of United Spinal will be available at the SCCA booth. The Association will also be attending the SCCA 2006 National Championship Runoff on October 14th and 15th, also in Topeka, Kansas.
