Free “Life After Spinal Cord Injury” Conference

West Orange, NJ–– United Spinal Association and the Northern New Jersey Spinal Cord Injury System (NNJSCIS), with support from the Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation (KMRREC), are presenting Life After Spinal Cord Injury: Love, Work, & Play. A More In-Depth Exploration as part of their ongoing consumer education series addressing key medical and quality-of-life issues affecting people with spinal cord injury and disorders (SCI/D). The free conference will take place at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in West Orange, NJ, on Friday, October 20 from 9:00am through 4:00pm.

The conference, also sponsored, in part, by the Henry H. Kessler Foundation and the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, will target three main areas of concern for persons with SCI/D:

  • Love––relationships, intimacy, and parenting;
  • Work––employment issues;
  • Play––community accessibility, sports, recreation, and wheelchair accessible entertainment.

The goal is to foster an open dialogue between attendees and the professionals leading presentations, workshops, and resource booths. The conference is structured to allow substantial time for questions and answers. To register, contact Yvonne Moiseau, 718-803-3782, ext. 233. For more information, please visit: www.unitedspinal.org or www.KMRREC.org.

ABOUT NORTHERN NJ SPINAL CORD INJURY SYSTEM:
NNJSCIS was established as a Spinal Cord Injury Model System of Care (SCIMS) in 1990 by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). This project is a cooperative effort of Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation (KMRREC), Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey—University Hospital. The NNJSCIS provides a comprehensive continuum of state-of-the-art care for persons with SCI and their significant others from the time of injury through long-term follow-up in the community.

ABOUT UNITED SPINAL ASSOCIATION:
Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, United Spinal Association is a national membership organization for people with spinal cord injury or disorder. The organization helped build the PVA-United Spinal Association Center for Neuroscience and Regeneration Research at Yale University in 1988 and they have contributed millions of dollars over the years to finding a cure for spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis. The Association also provides significant annual funding to the Spinal Cord Damage Research Center at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY (named after the Association’s late executive director). And for our veterans, United Spinal’s lobbying efforts helped get legislation passed in record time that will provide traumatic injury insurance for our soldiers returning from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Membership in the Association is free and open to all people with spinal cord injury or disorder.
