United Spinal Joins National Council on Independent Living

Jackson Heights, NY––United Spinal Association has recently joined the ranks of thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations across the country by becoming a member of the National Council on Independent Living, commonly known as NCIL. Founded in 1982, with its national headquarters based in Washington, DC, NCIL is the oldest cross disability, grassroots organization run by and for people with disabilities. NCIL’s message is clear and mirrors United Spinal’s mission and purpose: Independent living by envisioning a world where people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully.

As a member of NCIL, United Spinal will become a part of one of the largest organized networks of individuals committed to advancing the lives of people with disabilities. From national advocacy/legislative campaigns on timely issues such as health care and employment, to representation at the annual conference, United Spinal’s partnership with NCIL will enable it to further its work and mission on behalf of members and all people living with spinal cord injury and disorders (SCI/D).

John Lancaster, NCIL’s Executive Director, is also a member of United Spinal Association, read more about Mr. Lancaster’s story.

United Spinal Association is a national nonprofit advocacy organization for veterans and all people with spinal cord injuries or disorders. In addition to helping write the Americans with Disabilities Act, United Spinal was also instrumental in drafting portions of the Fair Housing Amendments Act (FHAA) and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). The Association promotes compliance with these laws and educates the public about them. Membership is free and open to all individuals with a SCI/D.
