Jackson Heights, NY–In the wake of recent severe snowstorms that have dumped several feet of snow in the west disrupting mail delivery, shutting down roads, businesses, schools and airports, United Spinal Association reminds residents to keep sidewalks and curb ramps clear of snow and debris to provide easy access for individuals using wheelchairs.
“Using a wheelchair gives people with mobility impairments freedom,” said Terence Moakley, associate executive director and member of United Spinal Association, a national disability rights organization. “The ability to use a curb ramp at a street intersection or another pedestrian crosswalk provides us the freedom to move around the community. However, just a few inches of unshoveled snow on a curb ramp, or at the top and bottom of it, robs us of our freedom to get around during winter.”
In most cities, homeowners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of their property. Failing to clear a sidewalk in a timely manner can result in a fine. Complaints about uncleared or obstructed sidewalks should be referred to a local public service agency.
“Curb ramps provide safe access for wheelchair users and the elderly who have difficulty stepping up and down, as well as for families who have children in strollers or carriages,” concluded Moakley.
