New York, NY—United Spinal Association President and Chief Executive Officer Paul J. Tobin attended New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Fleet Week Ceremony at Gracie Mansion May 23rd to honor leaders of New York’s veterans service organizations.
“It was an honor to receive the Mayor’s invitation, and a tremendous honor to attend,” said Tobin. “Our nation is in the midst of a divisive war, making it paramount at this time for all Americans, despite their political beliefs, to recognize, honor, and give thanks for the enormous sacrifices these men and women have made for our country.”
Celebrating its 20th year, Fleet Week is the opportunity for New Yorkers to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen and thank them for their service. Fleet Week kicked off with its traditional “Parade of Ships” on Thursday, May 23 and, while in the city, nearly 3,000 servicemen and women participated in Memorial Day parades in all five boroughs, volunteered with local community organizations, and spent time with family while enjoying the sites of New York. United Spinal proudly serves veterans every day through our VetsFirst program—a network of expert national service officers providing assistance and free representation in claims for benefits and services before the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as before other agencies and the federal courts.
ABOUT UNITED SPINAL ASSOCIATION
United Spinal Association was created 61 years ago by a group of paralyzed World War II veterans to assert their fundamental civil right to the same opportunities their fellow Americans enjoyed. Through their efforts to secure better health care, accessible public buildings and transportation, and equal opportunities in the workplace, those veterans continued serving their country long after leaving the battlefield and today that legacy lives on in United Spinal Association’s expanded mission to serve not just our brave veterans but all Americans living with paralysis or other mobility impairments.
