United Spinal Association’s Accessibility Services Program Presents at Construction Expo 2007
Linda M. Volpe, Compliance Specialist with United Spinal Association’s Accessibility Services program, facilitating the “Accessibility Update: City, State & Federal” training at the Construction Expo 2007 in New York on May 1, 2007. Presenting three trainings at the two-day Expo, Accessibility Services is a vital part of United Spinal’s commitment to guaranteeing the civil rights of individuals living with spinal cord injuries and disorders. Accessibility Services helped write the public transportation provisions of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as well as portions of the Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 and the Fair Housing Amendments Act. Accessibility Services continues working to enhance accessibility requirements in various building codes and standards. The team helped to make New York City, the largest city in the country, provide fully accessible buses and subways and cut every curb in all five boroughs to allow wheelchair access—an achievement that inspired dozens of other municipalities to follow suit.
