Disability Group to Train Building Design Professionals in Pennsylvania

Jackson Heights–The United Spinal Association is offering a one-day training session on requirements for construction of accessible structures in compliance with the International Building Code, Wednesday, September 19th from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM at the Eden Resort in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Thursday, September 20th 8:30 AM to 4:30 at the Marriot Downtown in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

This training is offered to registered architects, professional engineers, and building officials. It is sponsored by the International Codes Council Inc. (ICC), in cooperation with AIA Pennsylvania. For registration information, contact the ICC’s Lizette Chagolla at 1-888-422-7233, ext. 4230, or at lchagolla@iccsafe.org.

The training includes an overview of plan review and inspection for construction allowing persons with mobility, sight, and hearing disabilities to use buildings of all types. Discussion will also focus on the relationship of the International Building Code to the federal Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines and Fair Housing Accessibility Guidelines.

Both trainings are spearheaded by Dominic Marinelli, who heads United Spinal Association’s Accessibility Services project, www.accessibility-services.com. Mr. Marinelli has conducted similar trainings at venues across the nation, and leads an accessibility services’ staff of experienced design professionals and code officials. Mr. Marinelli serves on the ICC’s national accessibility standard committee, A117.1, which is revised every five years.

United Spinal Association is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization formed in 1946 to provide expertise, create access to resources and strengthen hope, thereby enabling people with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) to fulfill their potential as active members of their communities. United Spinal advocated for and drafted significant portions of landmark federal legislation including the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Amendments Act, and we continue to provide critical health care and benefits counseling to military veterans from all wars with spinal cord injuries through our Vets First program. Membership is free and open to individuals with disabilities of the spinal cord of all ages. For more information, please visit www.unitedspinal.org or call 800-404-2898.
