Wheeling to Fire Safety
Jackson Heights, NY–To help commemorate National Fire Prevention Week from October 7 - 13, United Spinal Association announces the availability of Fire Safety for Wheelchair Users at Work and at Home. Single copies of the booklet may be downloaded from www.unitedspinal.org, or obtained free of charge by calling 1-800-444-0120.
The publication is also available in Spanish, under the title Seguridad contra incendios para usuarios de sillas de ruedas en el trabajo y en el hogar.
Fire Safety for Wheelchair Users emphasizes prevention and planning, and applies to all persons with mobility impairments. It includes information on the various types of smoke and heat detectors, as well as pointers on their placement within the home. Statistics show that detectors can reduce the risk of fire-related fatalities by 60%. Therefore, getting detectors and being able to maintain them, whether independently or with the assistance of family or friends, is critical.
Local fire departments are the best resource on what to do in the event of a smoke or fire emergency. Professional firefighters can identify potential hazards in the home or workplace and can help plan one or more escape routes. Not surprisingly, Fire Safety for Wheelchair Users states the most important fire planning rule as, “Exit the home as quickly as possible.” Fire Safety for Wheelchair Users also contains prevention tips when using electrical appliances, when cooking, when using space heaters and heating systems.
Bulk copies of the pamphlet may be purchased for $1.00 each, plus shipping and handling. Payment by check or credit card for multiple copies must be arranged in advance by calling
1-800-444-0120.
