On Tuesday, January 22nd from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM at St. Charles Hospital Rehab Center, 2nd Floor, conference room 2 in Port Jefferson, United Spinal Association staff will present a peer mentor training program.
This program is open to anyone with a spinal cord injury who is interested in becoming a peer mentor.
A peer mentor is someone who is living successfully with a spinal cord injury; who is knowledgeable about daily living skills, coping strategies, and community resources; and, who is committed to sharing his or her experience with other spinal cord injured individuals.
Attending and mentoring at this event will be United Spinal Association’s Social Services director Jerome Kleckley, who is himself a person with a spinal cord injury. Mr. Kleckley stated, “a spinal cord injury requires learning new ways to live. Our daily challenges are different than non-disabled persons, but we can still enjoy relationships, succeed in the workplace, and become active members of our communities.”
United Spinal Association’s Peer Mentoring program is made possible by a grant from the Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation in New York City.
The St. Charles Hospital Rehabilitation Center provides the highest quality of care possible to rehabilitate the individual so that he or she may function to maximum potential in the least restrictive environment. For further information, visit http://stcharleshospital.chsli.org.
