United Spinal Participates in Upcoming Presidential Candidates Forum
Paul J. Tobin, President/CEO, United Spinal Association, will be part of a panel at a Presidential Candidates Forum in Columbus, Ohio on July 26th. United Spinal helped to plan the event.
July 26th marks the 18th anniversary of passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark piece of legislation recognizing the civil rights of Americans with Disabilities.
Senator John McCain will be attending via satellite. Senator Tom Harkins will attend on behalf of Senator Obama, who is traveling in Europe and the Middle East. Judy Woodruff, news anchor and journalist (“The News Hour with Jim Lehrer”) will act as Moderator. Ms. Woodruff will question the candidates and panel members, including Mr. Tobin, about disability issues that matter to voters. Approximately 2500 persons with disabilities will be present at the Forum.
People with disabilities are a huge voting block that historically has been ignored during presidential and congressional elections. The Presidential Forum will bring issues and concerns of Americans with disabilities to the consciousness of present and future leaders, and help to explain how policies and regulations impact their quality of life.
Mr. Tobin states: “I am proud that United Spinal has been able to join other organizations to help make the Presidential Candidates Forum a reality. It is time that our presidential candidates recognize people with disabilities as a considerable voting block. Hopefully this is the beginning of a new era.”
