Florida No Go On GAO Survey of Voting Accessibility

Florida is the only state to deny access to its polls for a national voting survey to assess how accessible and fair voting is to people with disabilities and senior citizens. The study is being conducted by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO).

United Spinal Association President Paul J. Tobin asks “What does Florida have to hide from the GAO? If voting in Florida is accessible to people with disabilities and senior citizens — as the law requires — it has nothing to fear. If not, the problems must be assessed and corrected in order to protect the most fundamental right of citizenship in a democracy — the right to vote.”

GAO is widely respected for its fair, objective, non-partisan studies. It has selected 100 counties across the country to draw a nationally representative sample. It seeks limited access to Florida polling places in four counties — consistent with Florida and local laws.

With the election less than two weeks away, please act now.

To protect the right to vote — especially if you live in Florida — contact both the Governor and the Secretary of State — tell them Florida must participate in the GAO voting accessibility survey.
