Dominic Marinelli, Appointed to NYS Fire Prevention & Building Code Council

Dominic Marinelli

We’re proud to announce the appointment of Dominic Marinelli, VP of Accessibility Services, to the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council by Governor Cuomo with the advice and consent of the Senate.

According to the NY DOS website, “The Building Code Council is empowered to maintain and periodically update the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and State Energy Conservation Construction Code, and to adopt higher or more restrictive local standards upon the recommendation of local governments.”

“The members of this group represent architects, engineers, builders, trade unions, persons with disabilities, code enforcement, fire prevention, villages, towns, cities, counties, state agencies, the State Fire Administrator and the Secretary of State,” according to the website.

“I could not be prouder to represent United Spinal Association on the New York State Building Code Council.  The late Terry Moakley represented the organization at a time when the Building Code of New York State required more accessibility standards than any state in the country and I could not thank Governor Cuomo enough for nominating me to carry on this important tradition for United Spinal Association’s members and all people with disabilities in New York State,” Marinelli said.

Dominic Marinelli has been with the United Spinal Association for 25 years. Mr. Marinelli is a certified Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner by the International Code Council and serves on various committees including American National Standard Institute Residential Committee which he serves as Chair. He also represented United Spinal Association on the US Access Board’s Emergency Transportable Housing Advisory Committee.

Mr. Marinelli provides continuing education to members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA). He is a Contract Instructor for the International Codes Council (ICC) and an Adjunct Faculty Member at Pratt/s Center for Continuing & Professional Studies in New York City.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury can result in paralysis of the muscles used for breathing; paralysis and/or loss of feeling in all or some of the trunk, arms, and legs; weakness; numbness; loss of bowel and bladder control; and numerous secondary conditions including respiratory problems, pressure sores, and sometimes fatal spikes in blood pressure. Approximately 12,000 new spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S. each year. A majority of injuries occur from motor vehicle accidents, falls, work-related accidents, sports injuries, and penetrations such as stab or gunshot wounds.
