Nobody likes to be talked down to or treated like they are invisible. But it happens every day to people who live with disabilities or use wheelchairs to get around. Many who interact with people with disabilities for the first time, whether it’s in a social or business setting, are unaware that their language and actions may be offensive and inappropriate. And it’s usually not due to a lack of sensitivity, but more of a lack of understanding.
United Spinal Association responded today to the choice of the Bloomberg administration and New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) as it failed to pick the next generation taxi that could save taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, as well as serve wheelchair users and the fast growing aging population.
On April 21st, United Spinal hosted its Disability Leadership and Policy Summit at Temple University’s Student Center in Philadelphia, PA to address employment issues facing people with disabilities, including students, veterans, and wheelchair users.
Here’s a great way to support United Spinal. Download a new smart phone application called Mobile Tattletale that helps prevent teenagers from texting while driving. A portion of the proceeds from the application, which costs $4.99 per year, will go to United Spinal’s wide range of programs and services for people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders.
On March 23, 2011, “Affordable Care Act” celebrated its first anniversary and there remains significant confusion among those with disabilities about the law, including concerns as to whether it even still exists. United Spinal Association is taking this opportunity to compile answers to the most often heard queries we have received from our members and others about the law. Like the game so many of us have played on those long car trips, we identified “20 Questions” that have often been raised about the law’s status, provisions, benefits and impacts.
