Description

The Gilda Trautman Newman Rehabilitation Center at Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive interdisciplinary, team-oriented, family-centered services to patients from birth through 21 years. We offer consulting medical services in more than 40 pediatric specialties.

Our facility is additionally accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). This national organization reviews rehabilitation facilities and accredits only if high standards are reached. Children’s Hospital of New Orleans Rehabilitation Center is the only pediatric CARF accredited facility in Louisiana.

The rehabilitation goal for children and adolescents is to concentrate on restoring abilities by helping them adapt to their new skills. Each patient is followed using a criteria-based system to evaluate functional skill development with respect to medical status, motor skills, cognitive and communicative abilities, self-care capabilities, and the family’s needs. A comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the individual child is developed. This interdisciplinary plan is reviewed and updated at weekly team meetings. The team uses a nurse case-management approach to coordinate treatment plans with the child, family, physicians and team members. Discharge planning incorporates transitioning to school, vocational referrals, community reintegration, and access issues.

Children’s Hospital is a 247-bed, not-for-profit pediatric medical center, offering a complete range of healthcare services for children from birth to 21 years. With over 40 pediatric specialties and more than 400 physicians, it is the only full-service hospital exclusively for children in Louisiana and the Gulf South.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury can result in paralysis of the muscles used for breathing; paralysis and/or loss of feeling in all or some of the trunk, arms, and legs; weakness; numbness; loss of bowel and bladder control; and numerous secondary conditions including respiratory problems, pressure sores, and sometimes fatal spikes in blood pressure. Approximately 12,000 new spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S. each year. A majority of injuries occur from motor vehicle accidents, falls, work-related accidents, sports injuries, and penetrations such as stab or gunshot wounds.
