Some Of The Kids

Meet some of the 2009 Kids Sports Spectacular Kids
The Ayala family at the Kids Sports Spectacular

Jose Ayala, who is 10 years old and will be going into the 5th grade, attended his 3rd Kids Sports Spectacular this weekend at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA.

He was accompanied by his mother Mayra, his sister Mayelie who is 6 and his cousin Cierra. His mom said, "he was so excited today as he woke up much earlier than usual (6am) ready to go. She added, "this is a special day for him as he loves sports and looks forward to this day." His favorite sport is baseball followed by basketball and he spent most of his time playing those 2 sports on the same floor that the NHL Flyers and the NBA 76ers play.

Natalie Kolander and family at Kids Sports Spectacular

Natalie, who is 9 years old, found out about the KSS from her connection to Katie’s Komets, a wheelchair basketball team in the Philadelphia area.

Her father Jeff said, "This is a great opportunity for Natalie to be exposed to a wide variety of sports." Natalie added, "I never played tennis before today, but I really enjoyed it."

Peter Hinkel and family at Kids Sports Spectacular

The Henkel family found out about the Kids Sports Spectacular from Bayada Nurses, one of the sponsoring organizations.

Peter, who is 5 years old, was accompanied to the Wachovia Center where the event was held, by his father Tim, his brother Chris and sister Lucy. Peter participated in many of the sports and had a great time.

His father Tim really liked this event because, "the children who are in wheelchairs and the able bodied kids can all play together."

The Lyle Family at Kids Sports Spectacular Phillip Lyle, who is 9 years old attended his first kids sports spectacular (KSS) with his parents Maribeth and Trevor.

Phillip had a chance to play basketball, tennis, bowling, hand cycling and softball on the same floor where the Flyer and 76ers play their NHL and NBA games. He is a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. He is also a big Donovan McNabb fan in particular as he is wearing McNabb’s #5 replica jersey.

He found out about the event from another child who has attended this event in the past, and signed up via the internet. "Phillip is enjoying these fast paced games today and is looking forward to learning how to play power soccer," said his mom Maribeth.

Phillip’s service dog Luke accompanied Phillip and his parents to the event.

DiPiazza family

Ali DiPiazza is a veteran wheelchair athlete who just competed in the national track and field competition representing the state of Pennsylvania.

She was accompanied by her brother Dominic who is 13 who although not a wheelchair user, participated in today’s activities in a wheelchair to support his sister.

Their mom Kim who drove them to this event, is one of the organizers and managers of Katie’s Komets, a co-ed wheelchair basketball team in the Philadelphia area.

They came to not only take part in this event but to also recruit new players for their team. Kim said, "It is important that we let as many people as possible know about the (sports) opportunities available to them." She also wants to give more children the opportunity to participate in wheelchair basketball.
