PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Unity and Solidarity

We had the opportunity recently to meet with some of the principals from Home Box Office (HBO) and ConEdison Solutions and tell them about our organization and our programs. I’m happy to report that both these organizations seemed very impressed with the work we do and expressed an interest in assisting us, particularly in our efforts to help veterans who are newly injured returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

Needless to say, it’s very gratifying to see that these organizations care about our veterans and are willing to join with us in our quest to help them. Getting the health care these veterans need is, of course, our primary objective; second, but just as important, is getting their lives back together and facilitating their return to their home communities. Our extensive experience enables us to step in and cut through the red tape; however, having other concerned individuals and entities willing to lend a hand makes us that much more effective.

HBO is upgrading 20% of their information technology and will be donating excess equipment for our computer clinics. ConEdison Solutions invited us to participate in an event at the Tamarack Golf Course in Connecticut, dedicated to Vietnam veterans. Executive Director Gerard M. Kelly and Associate Executive Director for Government Affairs John Del Colle attended the event along with me. We were well received by the people at ConEdison, some of whom were veterans themselves. We came away very pleased to have made important contacts with fellow veterans who are concerned for their brothers in arms in Iraq and Afghanistan. We anticipate working with them in the future and getting some assistance for our general programs, as well as our computer clinics.

A lieutenant colonel who attended the ConEdison event told a story about a soldier killed in action in Iraq who was brought back to his hometown in Wyoming. The town has only 900 people, but hundreds of people from neighboring towns came to mourn this young soldier. As the colonel traveled to the town, he was concerned about what he would say to the veteran’s parents. His mind was somewhat eased as he told about the many others killed in action who were being laid to rest across the country in a similar manner, and about the countless people who turn up to pay their respects and express solidarity with their fellow Americans. The colonel impressed upon those present our strength as a country and our unity, particularly at a time of need.

Unity and cooperation certainly play a part, not only in our nation, but also in the evolution of our organization. I’m very pleased by the contacts and support we are garnishing in the philanthropic and corporate sectors, and will continue to work hard to keep them alive and thriving-all with the goal of keeping our organization strong and vital for all its members. Please continue to pray for our troops and their safe return. Until next month, keep your annual appointments and semper fi!
