An issue that we have been following for quite some time has finally been resolved. The signs that were once posted at the moving walkways at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, that prohibited people in wheelchairs from using the moving sidewalks are no longer in place.
As of January 18, 2005, the Manager of Aviation Planning Division at The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (the agency that oversees the management and operation of Newark airport) confirmed that all of these signs have been removed from all airport terminals (A, B, and C) .
If you are traveling through any airport and come across signs that prohibit individuals in wheelchairs from using the moving walkways, or any additional problems at an airport, please contact:

“Taking Action” Updates
As many of you know, United Spinal Association encourages self-advocacy as a means of removing barriers and guaranteeing equal access for people with disabilities. Our newest featured section in Orbit, “Taking Action” Update, will highlight your successful advocacy initiatives.
We want to hear from you, whether it’s making your local library more accessible, or adding accessible parking spaces at the local town hall building or getting more curb ramps in your community. Please let us know about any successful advocacy initiative that you developed, or were a part of, and we’ll highlight it in our new section.
To let us know about your advocacy success story or initiative contact me at 718-803- 3782 if you’re in New York City, 800-404- 2898 (toll-free) if you’re outside New York City, or by e-mail at sconnell@unitedspinal.org.
