This is a reminder to all who might be putting off going to the doctor for small, but nagging, problems that won’t go away—or for an overdue physical examination. Attending to health issues is important for all of us and, as we get older, this becomes even more crucial. Getting the care we need not only improves our physical health, but also our mental health because we know we’ve done something good for ourselves.
The annual physical that our veteran members receive at VA hospitals generally includes the following: chest x-ray, sonogram, blood work to check sugar, cholesterol levels, and other conditions, an ultrasound examination to check bladder and kidney function, an EKG for patients 40 and over, and a full physical examination by a physician. This also gives you the opportunity to speak with your doctor about any health concerns you may have and to get the appropriate specialist referrals, if necessary. I list these things to ensure that you are not being shortchanged, whether you get your care at a VA hospital or in the private sector.
I know that not all of you are going to run to the doctor as a result of reading my column, but even if a very small percentage of our members is influenced to call their doctors and make the necessary appointments, I’ve accomplished my mission.
I would be remiss if I didn’t also put in a plug for starting an exercise regimen—though I must admit, in the same breath, that this is a resolution I myself have difficulty living up to. I know personally that the hardest part is motivating yourself to take the first step, which might mean getting to the gym or simply lifting some weights. Whatever that first step entails, the trick is to start! The rewards are immediate: getting fit and feeling better for it.
Caution: Before you start any exercise program, please consult with your physician to ensure that the workout you intend to engage in does not exceed your capabilities, or can harm you in any way.
Again, I urge you to make a concerted effort to stay healthy and fit. Until next month, please keep your annual appointments, and semper fi!
