President’s Message – An Introduction

As I assume the presidency, I have been reflecting on the numerous changes our organization has undergone in the past few years and the changes we still are faced with. The changes in the overall membership are mirrored in the Board of Directors.

This past month, a number of our Board members retired. Their combined years of service have helped to produce one of the greatest and most singular organizations in the nation. Their advocacy, supported by a dedicated staff, has brought about improvements in health care for people with spinal cord injury and progress in the rights of all individuals with disabilities. The growth our organization is experiencing has a solid foundation in the work of each individual Board member and their combined power working for you as a team. Our Board is one of the hardest working boards of any organization.

On behalf of the Board and staff of United Spinal, I want to thank Peter F. Addesso for his leadership as President. Peter has served in many capacities within our organization. He willingly took the helm and fought through some of the most difficult times as we changed our name and became the more inclusive United Spinal Association. We owe Pete more then we will ever be able to say.

I have seen first hand the commitment and labor of love our Board has put forth working for our members. I know this will continue with the present Board you elected. I ask each of you to stay active and support the continued growth of our organization. It is through your comments that the Board members stay in tune with the diverse needs of our organization. I ask each of you to show your support by looking around and asking “What can I do?” to make someone else’s life a little better. By taking action you will grow support for our organization.

As I embark on this new journey, I hope that I will live up to the legacy of my predecessor. I appreciate the trust the Board has placed in me and I promise to work for the betterment of our organization every day. When you see me, please introduce yourself and tell me how we are doing.

Clair Russell Hesselton, PhD
President
