LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Value Added

Something appeared on the face of this magazine last month that I never thought I’d see. It’s on the cover of this month’s Action, as well, in the black rule below the logo: a price-$2.50.

If you’re a member of United Spinal, don’t worry. You’ll always receive Action for free. The price and the subscription deal that we also initiated with the August issue are for nonmembers who we think will be interested in what this magazine has to offer. You may know someone-a caregiver, a person with a nonspinal-related disability, a close friend or family member, a member of an advocacy or educational organization-who may be interested in reading the kinds of stories Action covers. That is the audience beyond United Spinal’s membership that we’d like to reach. (And we’d be much obliged if you let them know subscriptions are available!)

The cost to nonmembers of a single issue is, we think, very reasonable considering the value of the product, value we try to add to with each issue (you save 33% off the cover price with a $20 one-year subscription). For instance in this issue, we are adding a new news section in the front-Research in the News-and a column in the back-Wheelchair Diffusion by United Spinal’s own Ziggi Landsman.

One of my favorite recent additions to Action is the art of Yvette Silver, which accompanies Kids in Action this month. You may know Yvette’s work if you’ve seen our extremely popular booklet, Disability Etiquette, which Yvette’s cartoons adorn on the cover and throughout. Obviously, the subject of that booklet has broad appeal, but I’ve always thought Yvette’s gently humorous cartoons, contrasting examples of good and bad etiquette, was a prime attraction, allowing us to make our points without banging readers over the head. I’m thrilled to renew our collaboration with Yvette in this venue.

If you haven’t seen Disability Etiquette, you can download it from our Publications page at www.unitedspinal.org/disability-publications-resources/disability-publications/. Or you can call our Publications Hotline, toll-free (800-444-0120), to order a free single copy. In any case, watch for Yvette’s drawings and mazes in coming issues.
