LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Twelve Actions

I was looking through past issues of Action while assembling the list of member miniprofiles that appears on page 38, and I had a strange sensation of being in a time machine. I remember talking to some of those members who were profiled last spring as though I had just spoken to them last week.

And yet, as we close this final issue of Action’s first year, I am amazed at how much has transpired within these pages in just 12 months. Thinking about all the subjects we’ve covered-winter and summer sports, accessible home modifications, working with a spinal cord disorder, traveling in a wheelchair-and about the additions of columns on pain management, wheelchair technology, insurance and financial issues to name a few, it feels like a century has passed!

In my decade as an editor at United Spinal, I don’t remember a previous year to compare with this one, as far as being fortunate enough to have my pick of writers on so many subjects. I’ve been thrilled, especially, to find so much talent among United Spinal’s members. In the upcoming year, you will be seeing even more writing from your fellow members. If you, too, have something you want to say to your community, I urge you to put it in writing and send it my way. I would be happy to consider any thoughtful, well-presented, well-written piece for Action on any subject relevant to United Spinal members.

I am sure we are looking at a new year as full of change as the last, and the prospect of that is exciting. But there will also be continuity. For example, the member miniprofiles we incorporated to celebrate our national reach after 60 years as an organization will continue into the new year. If you or a member you know would like to be spotlighted, send me a note, as well.

You can contact me via action@unitedspinal.org, or write to United Spinal Association, Action Magazine, 75-20 Astoria Boulevard, Jackson Heights, NY 11370-1177.

Happy holidays. Talk to you next year.
