LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT: Prescriptions

In this issue of Action, we focus on the advances in pharmaceutical research that improve our quality of life. One undeniable obstacle faced by many of our members is affordable access to these life-altering medications.

For instance, a prominent physician from a world-class rehabilitation center recently contacted me to express his concern that Ditropan (Oxybutynin), a commonly prescribed medication for spasticity of the bladder and the urinary tract, was being limited for his patients under Medicare Part D policies to 5 milligrams, three times per day-the common dose for the average user. For many of us with neurogenic bladder problems, however, effective dosing can be as high as 10 milligrams, four times per day. Together, we outlined a plan to advocate for a policy change, so people with SCI/D have access to the medications they need. Rest assured, United Spinal will continue to advocate for pharmaceutical research and access to the medications it produces.

On another note, United Spinal Association’s Board of Directors unanimously voted on January 31 to approve bylaw amendments that alter the method of electing United Spinal Board Members, allowing us to enlist prominent members of our association, the medical community, the business community and philanthropists. This is a significant change to our governance structure that will ultimately strengthen our association.

Finally, I encourage you to ask family and friends to join United Spinal, as members or as associates, and to make our association a stronger and even more effective voice on behalf of people with SCI/D.

Paul J. Tobin
President and CEO
