There is no doubt that most of the advancements in health care, and in spinal cord medicine, have been made possible by the ability to manage and control pain. We are forever indebted to our researchers and pharmacists in both the VA and civilian sector for making our lives more livable.
Of course, being able to afford the medications that many of us depend upon for our day-to-day functioning is another matter, and one that we as an organization need to monitor and address through the various agencies and the legislature. However, as you are all aware, the issue of health care, whether veterans or national, is the proverbial pink elephant in the living room that few want to address or only do so intermittently. This is why we all-individuals and organizations-need to stand together and fight for the health care needs of people with spinal cord disorders (SCD). I strongly urge you to help us protect your access to the health care, including the medications, you need. Join our Legislative Network by going on-line (www.unitedspinal.org) and clicking the Sign Up button below the Action icon. Watch for Action Alerts and become a voice for people with SCD with your representatives in Washington.
Lastly, be sure you use your medications appropriately. Check labels for expiration dates. Be sure to take the right amount to help you function optimally. Read up on your medications and make sure you are not taking anything that would counteract or minimize their therapeutic value.
Be well. Be as healthy as you can be.
