LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT: Extended Family

In this issue of Action, we are focusing on various aspects of the family as it relates to spinal cord disorders (SCD). Because the drive to reproduce is so strong is us, it isn’t surprising that the desire to build family is no less urgent for many people after they are injured or diagnosed with an SCD. Many are fortunate to have children of their own, while many others find adoption to be the perfect solution for growing a household. Our families take many forms.

I would like to pose the perspective that United Spinal Association and its members also constitute a family and a community. As individuals, we may rely on family to help us further our goals and personal objectives. Likewise, United Spinal Association receives its inspiration from the feedback and participation of its members. Our programmatic decisions are largely driven by the problems and experiences confronting our membership. Fighting for the rights of our members has been at the forefront of our efforts. On a more individual level, our leadership has also mentored and given encouragement where needed. This becomes more challenging with our growing constituency, but our modern communication tools allow us to break geographic barriers and to communicate instantly and effectively.

I will leave you with the thought that you are our inspiration and that United Spinal is your extended family and community. As such, you need to let us know how we can serve you better.

Paul J. Tobin
President and Chief Executive Officer
