I expect many of you will be on vacation this month (as will I), and will therefore be interested in the theme of many of the articles in this issue: Recreation.
Some people hear that word and immediately think of activities that keep the body moving and the heart racing. For those people, I direct your attention to Andrea Jehn Kennedy’s piece on “high-octane” activities to engage in her home state of Colorado.
Andrea’s husband, Craig, is a United Spinal member who has personally tested each of the activities she describes, and many more. Together, the Kennedys are engaged in developing a series of books, under the collective title of Access Anything, that are filled with details on adaptive adventures in various places around the country. Currently two titles are available from OutskirtsPress.com: Access Anything: I Can Do That! and Access Anything: Colorado. Coming soon are books on Alaska, Hawaii, Florida, California, New England, and Washington, DC, to name a few.
If you’re of a less extreme temperament, you might enjoy horseback riding or wheelchair ballroom dancing, as they’re described in articles by Celina De León and Kelly Rouba. And I’m sure many of you will be perfectly happy recreating by the lake or ocean just reading about more physically demanding activities.
This month’s issue offers me the perfect chance to raise your consciousness about Action Online (www.unitedspinal.org/ publications/action). Several of the articles in this issue are fleshed out a bit, with more information, in their online versions. I encourage you, if you’re interested in a subject in this issue, to go online and find out more. And while you’re there, I hope you will wander around and explore our archives. Just click on a “Category” located on the left side of the screen to find all kinds of articles of interest to you. And please, feel free to leave a comment if you’d like.
Enjoy the rest of the summer.
