LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: Need for Knowledge

Last month we put a notice in Action for a DVD called Self-Care Independence that United Spinal Association made in association with the James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Bronx. The hour-long introduction to basic activities of daily living post-SCI has proven, beyond our expectations, to be a popular item . (It’s still available, by the way, for free by calling 800-404-8298, ext. 782 or e-mailing action@unitedspinal.org.)

People with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D) tend to be hungry for information. We at United Spinal have known this for all of our six decades of existence. It’s one of the reasons why we were determined to include a consumer conference with our annual professional conferences, which were held at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando in August. Hundreds of people with SCI/D and their family members responded and were rewarded with information of the sort we offer here. If you were unable to attend in person, we hope you’ll enjoy the highlights we present in this issue. And if you want even more information than you can get in our print edition, enjoy our Web exclusive highlights here.

With this issue, we are inaugurating what we expect to be a regular and popular feature, knowing what we do about your need for knowledge. Scott Chesney is a United Spinal member and motivational speaker who we’ve recruited to act as coach for readers who need guidance in any area of life. Maybe you want a simple solution to make your home more accessible; maybe you’re wondering what sorts of activities a high-level quad can do with an energetic toddler; or maybe you need reassurance about meeting an old flame you haven’t seen since before your diagnosis or injury. Whatever your concern is, Ask the Coach!

I, too, am hungry for information from you. If you have an idea, question or comment to share about Action, please drop me a line at action@unitedspinal.org.
