NYU Documentary Filmmaker Looking for Veterans to Tell Their “Coming Home” Stories

We received this request for help from veterans from a filmmaker at New York University:

My name is Marcia Rock and I’m a professor at NYU Journalism. I’ve produced many documentaries on important issues and I think your recovery and adjustment to civilian life is important and a story that should be told.

I want to tell it a new way though–through your own stories. I want you to shoot your problems, your frustrations, your triumphs and perhaps, some tips for other vets. I would then do some reporting based on your stories and perhaps take your problems to politicians or city officials or healthcare administrators. I will give you support and direction in the shooting. We’ll talk about the issues you feel important and how to capture them.

The stories can be about you or your caregiver, photographed by you or someone else. We have to work in DV.

I am currently putting together a funding proposal for this project and I need to show that my idea of citizen journalism with you shooting and participating, will work.

I’m looking for five volunteers to shoot a few hours for me so that I can edit a trailer to submit with the print proposal.

I’ve noticed on My Space, many of you already shoot video so I hope this sounds exciting. I’ve gotten encouragement from some of you through My Space and I appreciate it. If you can’t participate, let me know if you like this idea and maybe you know someone who can, so please pass this along. Someone already suggested that perhaps I should focus totally on the caregivers.

I look forward to talking to many of you soon.

Sincerely,
Marcia
