The Disability Rights Advocates recently announced its annual Turkey and Eagle awards. Eagle awards go to businesses or individuals who have promoted disability rights, while Turkey awards go to those who have been insensitive to disability issues. Also receiving Eagles were Shane’s Inspiration, a company developing accessible playgrounds, and Wilderness Inquiry, for creating accessible outdoor adventure opportunities. Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics also won for creating employment opportunities for young people with disabilities. The Turkey awards went to the Taco Bell Corporation for not removing architectural barriers; Hotels.com for refusing to guarantee accessible rooms; the state of Georgia for the lack of accommodations in prison facilities; and the Schwarzenegger administration in California for attempting to make extensive service cuts to the wages of in-home support service providers.
