VCU PM&R provides a complete program of care for persons with SCI and their families. VCU Health System is one of five Level I Trauma Centers in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the only one in central Virginia. Comprehensiveness, interdisciplinary communication, consumer needs assessments and integration of a continuum of services are important values which have guided program development at VCU. The VCU system of care continues to develop, and partnerships with local,regional and national rehabilitation agencies.
The Department provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) rehabilitation and care at VCU Medical Center and the Richmond VA Medical Center. We strive to maximize the quality of life of persons with Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders through the use of rehabilitation services. Our programs emphasize the enhancement of quality of life by improving functional independence, increasing participation in social activities, preventing further injury, and by education in health maintenance.
SCI Rehabilitation is an intensive interdisciplinary program utilizing the expertise of Spinal Cord Injury trained physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, speech and language pathologists, social workers, rehabilitation psychologists, rehabilitation nursing, wound care specialists, and dieticians along with a comprehensive group of consultants.
